WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (14-24) had their four-game winning streak snapped Saturday when the team took a 5-2 loss to the Norfolk State Spartans (20-23, 6-6 MEAC), Saturday afternoon. After getting out to a great start, the Lady Rams struggled against some tough defense and costly fielding miscues in the loss.
Neither team had a problem hitting the ball on Saturday as the two teams combined for 17 hits with the Spartans taking the 10-7 edge at the plate. WSSU senior pitcher Amber Shore led the Lady Rams' offensive attack with a three-for-three batting effort in the game. Sophomore catcher Bonika Terry also had a strong day with two hits in four at-bats and a run scored. The two were the only two Lady Rams to notch multiple hits in the game.
The game got off to a hot start with both teams scoring a pair of runs in the first inning. After the Spartans opened the game with a pair of first inning runs, the Lady Rams struck back when a single by WSSU senior centerfielder Whitney Wright drove in Terry for the first Lady Ram run of the game. WSSU sophomore third baseman Kayla Woodbury drove in the next run on an RBI double that left the score tied 2-2 after the first inning.
Unfortunately, the inning saw the Lady Rams' only runs of the game while NSU tacked on three unanswered runs, one in the third and a pair of seventh inning runs.
Shore (11-15) took the pitching loss, going all seven innings with three strikeouts and just one walk.
The Lady Rams and Spartans would go on to meet in the final game of the doubleheader immediately following the first game. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2909 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
