WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (14-26) gave a valiant effort, but came up just short in a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to the Norfolk State Spartans (21-23, 6-6 MEAC), Sunday afternoon. The Lady Rams' defense was great, holding the Spartans to just three runs despite allowing 10 hits to the Spartans.
The Lady Rams battled for all seven innings of the contest, forcing the Spartans to leave 10 runners on base in the game, but struggled to get runs across the plate despite some great individual hitting efforts. The trio of sophomore catcher Bonika Terry, senior second baseman Kendall Sutton, and senior pitcher Amber Shore notched two hits each for the Lady Rams in the loss. Terry and senior outfielder Whitney Wright both crossed the plate for the Lady Rams in the game.
The got off to a fiery start with both teams notching a run each in the first inning of play. Sutton would get things going with an RBI single that drove in Wright, who sprinted home from second base. The Lady Rams would strike again in the third inning when Sutton knocked in her second RBI single of the game, scoring Terry and putting the Lady Rams ahead, 2-1. The team could not hold on, however, allowing fifth and sixth inning runs to the Spartans.
The crucial play of the game came in the fourth inning when what would have been a Terry RBI single was negated by a runner's interference call. The run would have put the Lady Rams two runs ahead.
Shore (11-17) took the pitching loss with three strikeouts with just two walks.
With the loss, the Lady Rams complete the 2009 season with a 14-26 record. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2909 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
