WINSTON-SALEM, NC - WSSU junior center fielder Whitney Wright (Honeoye Falls, NY) and junior forward Jamal Durham (Winston-Salem, NC) have been selected as the WSSU Crown Trophy Student-Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 18, 2008 for their impressive athletic performances over the past seven days as announced by the Winston-Salem State University Department of Athletics.
Wright, a 5'7" outfielder from Honeoye Falls, NY is in her first season with the Lady Rams softball team following her transfer from Monroe Community College in Rochester, NY. In her first weekend of competition for WSSU Wright propelled the Lady Rams to a 7-1 victory over Morgan State University with the first home run of her WSSU career en route to a pair of hits and three RBI's. For her efforts she has been named the Crown Trophy WSSU Female Student-Athlete of the Week.
Durham, a 6'6" junior forward from Winston-Salem, NC helped to lead the Rams to a 58-57 victory over Howard University with four key free throws in the final 27 seconds of play as WSSU overcame a five-point deficit for a come-from-behind win. Durham tallied 10 points and six rebounds for WSSU in the win as he helped the Rams snap a three-game losing steak. For his efforts he has been named the Crown Trophy WSSU Male Student-Athlete of the Week.
