Lady Rams to Host Western Carolina in Wednesday Doubleheader

April 16, 2008

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (15-18) will look for an end to their recent struggles when they host the Western Carolina Catamounts in a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader at South Park Field. The Lady Rams head into the game having lost their last six games, including taking a three-game host sweep at the hands of the Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats last weekend.

Offensive struggles have plagued the Lady Rams during their recent skid as the team has scored just nine runs during the last six games, a far cry from the 10-runs per game that the team had averaged earlier this season. The team's recent struggles at the plate are a far cry from their season total. As a team, the Lady Rams are batting .302 and average 5.30 runs per game. Leading the way for the Lady Rams is freshman catcher Kayla Woodbury, who is batting .421 with 21 RBI this season. Also strong at the plate is junior first baseman Desiree Ramirez, who is batting .338 with 14 RBI. Sophomore Lonnie Jones is currently working her way back from an injury and will likely miss Wednesday's game. Her injury leaves the Lady Rams missing her .355 batting average and five RBI.

The team has turned up its defensive efforts, holding their opponents to batting .276. The Lady Rams have a .941 fielding average as a team with just 53 fielding errors this season. Junior pitcher Amber Shore is currently the team's ace with 20 appearances this season and a 3.58 ERA. She also leads the Lady Rams with 121 strikeouts.

The Lady Rams will look to avenge three losses to the Catamounts last season, including taking a doubleheader sweep at South Park Field.

Wednesday's doubleheader is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start with game two approximately 15 minutes following game one.
