CIAA Announces All-CIAA Softball Teams; Lady Rams Earn Seven All-CIAA Honors

April 20, 2006

HAMPTON, VA - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) has announced the 2006 All-CIAA softball teams as well as the CIAA softball player and rookie of the year as chosen by the CIAA Softball Coaches Association with Brandi Young of Johnson C. Smith University being selected as the 2006 CIAA Softball Player of the Year with Sophia Blue of North Carolina Central University being selected as the 2006 CIAA Softball Rookie of the Year.  The Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University earned seven total All-CIAA honors.

 

Young, a 5'7", senior third-baseman from Columbia, SC was an integral part of the Lady Golden Bulls' run to a CIAA Western Division runner-up finish as she ranked in the top-ten in the CIAA in 13 offensive statistical categories.

 

Six different institutions placed members on the All-CIAA First-Team as the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University earned a league-high four selections.  Bowie State University, Winston-Salem State University and Johnson C. Smith University each placed two players on the All-CIAA First-Team with Livingstone College and Virginia State each earning one All-CIAA performer.

 

Sophia Blue, a 5'6", freshman utility player from North Carolina Central University was selected as the CIAA Rookie of the Year as she helped to lead the Lady Eagles to the 2006 CIAA Western Division regular-season title.

 

The Lady Rams earned two All-CIAA First-Team selections as Louise Ellis was named to the team at first base and L'Tisha Bell being named to the First-Team at the center field position.

 

WSSU earned a lone All-CIAA Second-Team selection as Tyreka Cotton was selected to the team at third base.

 

Rounding out the All-CIAA honors for WSSU were a quintuplet of selections to the CIAA All-Rookie Team.  Amber Shore (pitcher), Elyon Taylor (Catcher), Kendal Sutton (2nd Base), and Domica Scott (right field) all garnered All-Rookie honors.

 

All the All-CIAA softball honorees will bid to earn their respective teams a CIAA title this week as they compete in the 2006 CIAA Men's Softball Championships from the campus of Virginia State University in Petersburg, VA.  The Championships will be held from Thursday, April 20, 2006 until Saturday, April 22, 2006.
