April 21, 2011

PETERSBURG, VA - The honors just keep coming in for the Winston-Salem State University softball program as WSSU head softball coach LaTaya Hilliard-Gray was named the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Softball Coach of the Year after leading the 2011 Lady Rams to a 25-11 record, a 15-1 record in the CIAA and a CIAA Southern Division Regular Season Championship.

"It's an honor. We haven't been able to win anything for so long and coming back in our first year and getting these accolades are a great accomplishment. I owe it all to the team" Hilliard-Gray said at the 2011 CIAA Spring Sports Awards Ceremony. "Just competing the way they did and representing me with all the hard work that they've done. I definitely appreciate what they've done and I'm looking forward to more as we compete for this championship."

The Lady Rams' quest for a CIAA Championship will begin tomorrow when the team opens the 2011 CIAA Softball Championship tournament as the #1 seed from the CIAA Southern Division. The Lady Rams will begin play at noon vs. Elizabeth City State on the campus of Virginia State University.
