Shore, Sidbury Named Crown Trophy Student-Athletes of the Week

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Department of Athletics announced that softball senior pitcher Amber Shore and men's track & field sprinter senior sprinter Gerrod Sidbury were named the Crown Trophy Student-Athletes of the Week for the week ending May 1, 2009.

Sidbury, a 6'1", 170-lbs. senior sprinter from Wilmington, N.C. had some great performances at the 2009 Penn Relays where he helped the Rams 4x400m relay team reach the collegiate finals at one of the most prestigious track & field meets in the nation. The Rams finished 24th in the preliminaries in the event at 3:13.57 with Sidbury running the second leg of the event. The Rams finished seventh in the college finals with a 3:20.69.

Shore led the Lady Rams to a three-game road sweep of the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs in Orangeburg, S.C. this weekend. Shore pitched in all three games of the sweep and finished with five hits and four runs scored in eight at-bats over the weekend. She alwo added three RBI. As a pitcher Shore (11-15) posted a 3-0 record with only one earned run over the weekend. She added 19 strikeouts and had just five walks in three games. She finished the weekend with a 0.56 ERA over the weekend.

Sidbury and the Rams will return to action at the UNC-Elite in Chapel Hill, N.C. while Shore and the Lady Rams will close out the 2009 season with a three-game weekend series against the Norfolk State Lady Spartans at South Park Field this Saturday and Sunday.

The Crown Trophy WSSU Student-Athlete of the Week award is presented every Wednesday to the Winston-Salem State student-athletes who have best demonstrated their athletic talents in the arena of sport by representing Winston-Salem State University.
