FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (1-2, 1-1 CIAA) began Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play with a bang when the team took a 9-0 win over the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos (0-3, 0-3 CIAA), Thursday afternoon at Mazarick Park in Fayetteville, N.C.
The win was the first of the season for the Lady Rams, who opened divisional play with the shutout victory. The team got things going early when the team swept doubles play. After taking a forfeit win in #3 doubles, the Lady Rams posted 8-0 wins at both the #1 and #2 doubles spots.
The momentum carried over into singles play where the Lady Rams went 6-0 to complete the win. After taking a forfeit win at #6 singles, the team rolled with four 6-0 wins at #2, #3, #4, and #5. WSSU senior Sloane Holmes closed out the effort with a 7-5 and a 6-2 win at the #1 singles spot.
With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA. The team also moves to 1-0 in CIAA Southern Division play. The Lady Rams will return to action, Saturday when they host the Saint Augustine's University Lady Falcons.
