SALISBURY, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-4, 0-2 CIAA) gave a strong effort, but the team came up short in a tough 9-0 loss to the Chowan Hawks (7-6, 3-0 CIAA), Saturday afternoon in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tennis Round-Up. The Rams could not match the firepower of the defending conference champions in the hard-fought loss.
Playing with a roster of five players, the Rams battled throughout the match, but could find no answers against the Hawks. After surrendering a point at #3 doubles, the Rams fell behind, 0-1 before an 8-0 loss at #2 doubles and an 8-1 loss at #1 doubles.
In singles play, the Rams continued to battle, but the team could find any answers for the Hawks. After taking a forfeit loss at #6 singles, the Rams took 6-0, 6-0 losses at #4, #5, and #2 singles. The team also took a 6-0, 6-2 loss at #1 singles before ending the day in a 6-0, 5-1 (retirement) loss at #3 singles.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in CIAA play. The team will begin the most important portion of the season this week when they head to Fayetteville State to open CIAA Southern Division play.
