WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (4-6, 3-3 CIAA) picked up their second key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division win of the week when the team took a 9-0 win over the Livingstone Lady Blue Bears (0-9, 0-6 CIAA), Thursday afternoon. The win was the second straight for the Rams who a solidifying their standing in the CIAA Southern Division.
The Rams opened the day with a clean sweep in doubles play. The Rams opened the day with a default win at #3 doubles and followed it with a pair of 8-0 wins at #1 and #2 doubles.
With a 3-0 lead, the confident Rams carried their momentum into singles play and never looked back. Once again, the Rams benefitted from a default win at #6 singles to go ahead 4-0. The junior tandem of Alexus Morgan and Aja Grant got thing started when they each recorded 6-0, 6-0 wins at #2 and #3 singles respectively. Junior Zakia Spencer and sophomore China Brown both recorded 6-1, 6-0 wins at #5 and #4 singles respectively, while senior Gabrielle Lindsay finished the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at #1 singles.
With the win, the Rams improve to 4-6 overall and 3-3 in CIAA competition. More importantly, the Rams improve to 3-1 in CIAA Southern Division play and the team holds a solid position in second place in the division. The Rams will return to CIAA action this weekend when the team heads to Charlotte, N.C. to take part in the second CIAA Round Up of the season. The Rams will open play against the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings in a 1:00 p.m. match at the Coleman/Cuthbertson Tennis Courts.
