WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (9-9, 7-4 CIAA) closed out Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division play the right way when the team took a 7-2 win over the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos (3-9, 3-9 CIAA), Friday afternoon. The win was the third straight for the Rams who close out division play with a 5-2 record and in second place in the division.
The Rams took control of the match early with three straight wins. The duo of junior Alexus Morgan and sophomore China Brown got things started with an 8-1 win at #2 doubles, followed by an 8-1 win at #1 doubles by senior Gabrielle Lindsay and junior Aja Grant. The tandem of junior Zakia Spencer and freshman Cylah Gaither closed things with an 8-3 win at #3 doubles.
With the three-point lead well in hand, the Rams continued to roll on their way to the win with four singles victories. Junior Aja Grant got things started when she claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win at #3 singles. Brown added a 6-1, 6-1 win at #4 singles. Gaither added a 6-2, 6-0 win at #6 singles while Lindsay closed the day with a 6-3, 6-2 win at #1 singles. The Rams did take a retirement loss at #2 singles as well as a loss at #5 singles, but in the end, the effort was enough to secure the Rams' third straight win.
With the win, the Rams lock into second place in the CIAA Southern Division with a 5-2 record. This marks the second straight season that Rams have earned a second place finish in the division. The Rams will return to action, Tuesday afternoon to close out the regular season when the team takes on the Salem Spirit in a cross-town rivalry road match. The match is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
