BOWIE, MD – The Winston-Salem State Rams (11-9) got things going the right way, Thursday when the team took a 5-1 win over the fifth-seeded Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls in the quarterfinal round of the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Women's Tennis Championship Tournament. The Rams clicked on all cylinders to take the quarterfinals win and advanced to the semifinal round of the tournament for the third straight season.
The Rams opened the day on a down note with an 8-2 loss at #3 doubles, but the team soon bounced back when the tandem of junior Alexus Morgan and sophomore China Brown combined for an 8-4 win at #2 doubles, followed by junior Aja Grant and senior Gabrielle Lindsay scoring an 8-5 win at #1 doubles.
With a 2-1 lead heading into singles play, the Rams needed three singles wins to claim the win. Fate would interfere on the Rams' behalf as a JCSU injury gave the Rams a win at #1 singles along with a 3-1 win. Brown added a 6-1, 6-0 win at #4 singles before Grant ended the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win at #3 singles and the win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 11-9 overall and advance to the semifinal round of the tournament against the top-seeded Chowan Hawks. The Rams and the Hawks are scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. start.
