BALTIMORE, Md. - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams tennis team got off to a good start on Thursday afternoon in Baltimore as they swept all three doubles matches en route to jumping out to a 1-0 match lead but could not hold on for a victory as the Lady Bears of Morgan State swept all six singles matches as they defeated WSSU 6-1 in MEAC women's tennis action.
The Lady Rams started the contest with a default win at third doubles and followed up the free victory with an 8-7 victory at first doubles and an 8-6 victory at second doubles en route to the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.
The lead would be short-lived however as Morgan State earned wins at all six singles positions as they scored six team points and emerged victorious 6-1.
Laken Joyce and Shannon Loughnan each performed well for the Lady Rams as they both fell in three-set marathon matches as Loughnan fell to Alexis McCoy at third singles 2-6, 6-1, 0-6 and Joyce fell to Viktoriya Lukyanenko 2-6, 6-4, 3-6 at second singles.
The loss drops the Lady Rams to 1-14 overall. WSSU will return to action on Sunday, March 15 as they face Virginia State at the WSSU Tennis Complex at 10:00 am.
