Durham, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams' tennis team improved to 8-6 on the season on Tuesday afternoon in Durham, NC as they defeated the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University by the score of 7-1 for the second consecutive match to earn a two-match series sweep over their CIAA rival in a pair of CIAA women's tennis league matches held at the NCCU Tennis Complex.
For the second consecutive match, the Lady Eagles would record only one point as Janelle Ligons defeated WSSU's Amber Stewart by the score of 8-6 at the first singles flight. Despite the first single flight loss, the Lady Rams would record wins at the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles flights and the second and third doubles flights en route to the 7-1 win.
Once again, the first doubles flight did not see a conclusion to the match as it was still ongoing when the contest's outcome was clinched by the Lady Rams. It remains unfinished.
The Lady Eagles would not record more than five points in any of the eight-game pro-set matches, with the exception of their first-singles victory, as WSSU rolled to the win, moving to 8-6 overall in the process.
The Lady Rams improve to .500 at 6-6 in the CIAA with the victory. The 6-6 conference mark is WSSU's best CIAA record in the past decade and keeps WSSU's hope of a CIAA Western Division regular-season tennis title alive.
WSSU returns to action on Thursday, April 7th, 2005 as the Lady Rams travel to Fayetteville, NC to take on the four-time defending CIAA champion Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University.
