Shaw Women's Tennis Leads After Day One; Lady Rams Sit In 6th Place

April 21, 2005

Richmond, VA - The Shaw University Lady Bears hold a narrow one-point lead over the Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University after the first day of women's tennis action from the 2005 CIAA Women's Tennis Championships in Richmond, VA. The Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University currently sit in sixth place after the completion of day one action.

Day one would be witness to the doubles flight action from the 2005 Championship, as Shaw University and arch-rival Fayetteville State, the two most talented women's tennis teams in the ultra-competitive CIAA, would not disappoint as the two teams accounted for all three championship matches.

The Lady Bears got the best of the Lady Broncos in the first and second doubles flights as Shaw's Ffion Fletcher and Victoria Enebechi recorded a first doubles championship and Tanisha Hall and Monique Lawson earned the title in the second doubles flight.

Fayetteville State would earn the third doubles championship as Ari Bennett and Dana Maynor won a hard-fought match.

With their two first-place finishes, the Lady Bears earned a cumulative total of 23 points, while the Lady Broncos sit in second place with 22 total points.

The Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University and the Lady Trojans of Virginia State are the only two other teams to crack into the double-digits in points after day one as JCSU sits in third place with 17 points and Virginia State is in the fourth slot with 16.

The Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University posted a sixth-place finish after the first day of competition as the Lady Rams earned an eighth-place finish at first doubles, a sixth-place finish at third doubles, and earned a team-best fifth-place finish at second doubles. The second doubles team of Amanda Walker and Trinette Lewis would secure WSSU's highest point total of the afternoon, earning four points for a fifth-place finish.

All eight teams will return to action on Thursday as they battle in the first two rounds of the singles competition. The singles finals are slated to be held on Saturday morning, with an overall champion being crowned shortly thereafter.
