WSSU Women's Tennis Turns In Nearly Flawless Performance At Guilford

Oct. 4, 2009

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Winston-Salem State University women's tennis team turned in a nearly flawless performance in a Davis Cup-style tournament versus Guilford College as the Lady Rams posted a 13-1 record from the campus of Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C.

The Lady Rams swept two rounds of singles matches en route to posting a flawless 11-0 record and won two of three doubles matches as they dominated Guilford.

In singles action Sloane Holmes defeated Mackey Wesner 6-1, 6-2 and followed her victory up with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Guilford's Mary Simpson.

WSSU's Kayla Carter defeated Mary Simpson 6-2, 6-2 and posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Mackey Wesner as she completed a 2-0 sweep.

Johanna Nunez earned a victory over Nina Bollag 6-2, 6-2 as she closed out play with a perfect 1-0 record.

The Lady Rams' Bianka Locklear downed Morgan Howard 6-0, 6-0 and posted a 5-7, 6-12, 10-8 victory over Nina Bollag in a three-set marathon match.

Kalin Jarvis downed Jackie Goldberg 6-0, 6-0; Laken Joyce defeated Paulette Wyatt 6-3, 6-2 and Gabrielle Benjamin downed Jackie Goldberg 6-1, 6-0.

The Lady Rams capped a perfect 11-0 singles record by posting a 2-1 record in doubles play as Chelsea Chatman and Kalin Jarvis defeated Mary Simpson and Morgan Howard 8-2 and Laken Joyce and Gabrielle Benjamin earned an 8-2 victory over Paulette Wyatt and Jackie Goldberg.
 

 

Sloan Holmes and Kayla Carter dropped the Lady Rams' only match of the day as the duo dropped a 7-5 decision to Guilford's Nina Bollag and Mackey Wesner.

WSSU head coach Charlie Schoderbek, commenting post-match said "I am proud of our team and the performance we turned in today. The scores of the matches do no indicate how close many of these matches truly were. Both teams came away with many positives today and we truly appreciate Guilford College's hospitality and sportsmanship."

The Lady Rams return to action Oct. 23-25, 2009 at cross town Wake Forest University as they participate in the Demon Deacons' ITA Singles Tournament.
