WSSU Sprints Show Up Big at 2012 Liberty Open

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams and Lady Rams indoor track & field teams had some very strong showings at the 2012 Liberty Open with the WSSU sprinters leading the way. The WSSU tandem of senior Shanika Lamons and freshman Cruz Vargas-Sullivan led the way for the teams with both winning their events at the meet.

The two event wins capped a great overall day for the Rams and Lady Rams with strong finishes and times all over the Tolsma Indoor Track in Lynchburg, Va. Lamons won the women's 200m dash with a time of 25.38 while Vargas-Sullivan finished a close sixth place with a 26.41. In the women's 400m dash, it was Vargas-Sullivan who would take first place when she crossed the finish line in 58.73. She was the only runner to finish in under a minute. Senior Ashley Lawson had a great showing as well with a fourth place finish in the event. She ran a 1:00.52 while sophomore Kristi Baptiste finished seventh with a 1:00.81.

Though the Lady Rams sprinters had a great day, the WSSU middle distance runners also had a great effort with sophomore Brittney Killebrew leading the way when she placed second in the women's 800m run. She finished the event in 2:23.48.

The Rams also stepped up for some great efforts as well with freshman Michael Neal finishing third in the men's 200m dash. His 22.66 was the best collegiate time at the event. Neal also had a strong effort in the men's 60m dash when he placed seventh with a 6.96. The Rams middle distance runners also had a great day with freshman Lewis Benjamin finishing seventh in the men's 400m dash with a 51.42. The Rams also had a great effort in the men's 800m run with junior Andrew Chebii placing third with a 1:58.18 while senior Desmond Wiggan added a fourth-place finish with a 1:58.61. The Rams' success carried to the relays as the WSSU 4x400m relay placed second with a 3:25.78.

The great efforts will need to continue as the Rams and Lady Rams will return to the track on February 10th to compete in the 2012 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Indoor Track & Field Championships. The Lady Rams will head to the event looking to repeat as champions as the Rams look to follow-up last season's second place finish.
