PETERSBURG, VA – The Winston-Salem State University Rams and Lady Rams track & field teams had a solid opening day at the 2012 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Friday. After the first day, the Lady Rams sit in second place while the Rams are ranked third.
The Lady Rams finished the opening day with a team total of 29 points, just five points shy of the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls, the defending conference champions. WSSU senior sprinter Shanika Lamons continues to lead her great effort this season as she won the preliminaries of the women's 200m dash finals with a 24.40 in the event. She will be joined by freshman Cruz Vargas-Sullivan and senior Denesha Jiles in the event finals. Lamons also reached the finals of the women's 100m dash with a second place time of 11.98. The duo of junior Tyrah Winfrey and sophomore Brittney Killebrew both qualified for the finals of the women's 800m run. Killebrew finished third in the women's 3000m run with a 11:38.21.
The Rams also had a strong day with junior Andrew Chebii leading the way. He won the men's 1500m run with a 4:05.3 in the event. Senior Desmond Wiggan placed third in the event with a 4:05.56.
