Head track and field coach Halcyon Blake led Jeptolo and the men's and women's track and field teams into their first NCAA-sanctioned outdoor track and field action of the year with the competition being WSSU's first in over five seasons following the revival of the track and field programs this Spring.
Friday's winners include Edinboro's Kelly Richards (12:03.18) in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase; Dan Field of Edinboro (9:41.01) in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase, with FAMU's Gerald Christian (9:56.58) running fourth; Irene Jeptolo of Winston-Salem State (10:51.34) in the women's 3000 meters; Kerone Fairweather of Grambling State (15:39.51) in the men's 5000 meters.

Latheria Lewis of Tennessee State (14.66 meters) in the women's shot put, with FAMU's April McGriff (12.02 meters) fifth; Anthony Dale of Grambling State (55.02) in the men's javelin; Shawnalee Jenkins of Bethune-Cookman (42.35 meters) in the women's javelin, with FAMU's Darah Valville (23.84), 12th overall; Karla Blankenship of Troy University in the women's pole vault (3.16 meters), with FAMU's Valville second (3.06); Troy's Michael Heck in the men's shot put (15.49 meters).
In Friday's preliminary heats, FAMU's Shantrice Greene had the fastest time (14.56) in the women's 100 meter hurdles; Ashley Gillis ran second overall (12.49) in the women's 100 meters; Southern University's Carie Steed (14.98) had the fastest time in the men's 110 meter hurdles, while FAMU's LaJarvis Cook ran third overall (11.11) in the men's 100 meter dash.
