WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State University men's and women's track and field teams turned in very impressive performances on their first day of competition from the 2007 Wake Forest University Track and Field Open on Friday afternoon at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

WSSU's Wykeita Barnett turned in a 20th place finish in the preliminaries of the women's 100 meters as she turned in a time of 12.16 seconds as she narrowly missed qualifying for Saturday's finals.

However, Barnett placed ahead of 46 other racers from some of the nation's biggest and most elite track and field programs in the nation.

Barnett was not the only WSSU runner to turn in an impressive performance as Irene Jeptolo finished the women's 3000 meter steeplechase in the 11th position with a time of 11:30.74.

On the men's side of things the Rams continue to impress as Richard Marcellus narrowly missed qualifying for Saturday's finals in the men's 100 meters as he finished in the 23rd position with a time of 10.82 seconds.

The most impressive showing of the day would again belong to the Rams' Gerrod Sidbury who placed 11th in the finals of the men's 400 meters with a time of 48.41 seconds.  Sidbury defeated runners from many of the nation's elite track programs as he out-paced athletes from North Carolina, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Miami, and North Carolina State.

The WSSU track and field teams return to action on Saturday afternoon starting at 1:00 pm as the WFU Track and Field Open concludes at Kenter Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University.
