Winston-Salem, NC - Against a field of extraordinary competitors, the Winston-Salem State University track and field teams turned in a performance that earned them 22 top-10 finishes at the conclusion of the 2006 Wake Forest Open from the campus of Wake Forest University on Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Rams earned nine top-10's while the men recorded 13 top-10's on the day as WSSU capped a weekend of impressive performances.

Wykeita Barnett turned in a third-place finish in the 100 meters as she recorded a time of 12.48 seconds.

Geri-Lena White recorded a time of 25.86 seconds in the women's 200 meters to place second in the event, only .75 seconds behind Kayla Johnson of Wheeling Jesuit, the winner of the event.  WSSU's Sandy Harrison placed sixth in the same event with a time of 26.61 seconds.

Harrison would improve upon her sixth place finish in the 200 meters as she earned a runner-up finish in the women's 400 meters with a time of 59.1 seconds, only two-tenths of a second behind Duke University's Kelly McCann (58.9 seconds).

The sprint events were not the only events where the WSSU women would have success as NCAA Division II Southeast Region Athlete of the Year Irene Jeptolo recorded a seventh place finish in the women's 3000 meters with a time of 10:53.03.  Jeptolo would also earn a 15th place finish in the women's 1500 meters.

The Lady Rams' relay teams continued their success on the track as the WSSU women recorded a second-place finish in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 50.01 seconds, just behind the first-place Wake Forest Demon Deacons who turned in a time of 48.48 seconds.  The same relay team placed third in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:08.82.

On the field side of things, the Lady Rams earned a pair of top-10 finishes as Heather Edwards finished 10th in the shot put with a distance of 8.74 meters (28-08.25 feet).  Miah Harris placed ninth in the discus throw with a distance of 30.12 meters (98-10 feet).

The WSSU men turned in an impressive performance on the track as they started their day on the track with a pair of top-10 finishes as Brock Bynum finished seventh in the men's 100 meters with a time of 10.90 seconds.  Bynum's teammate Paul Williams turned in a time of 10.98 seconds, good enough for a finish tied for eighth.

The Rams wasted no time in the 200 meters as Richard Marcellus earned a sixth-place finish with a time of 22.41 seconds with teammate Paul Richard earning a seventh-place finish with a time of 22.48 seconds.

WSSU's Gerrod Sidbury turned in an impressive time of 48.6 seconds to place third in the men's 400 meters as he trailed only Eric Seely and Willie Idlette from host-team Wake Forest University.

The men's 500 meters saw WSSU's Kenneth Koech earned an eighth-place finish with a time of 16:21.8.

The Rams continued their success in the hurdles events as Ezra Yowell placed second in the 100 meter high hurdles with a time of 15.05 seconds.  Jordan Holley placed fifth in the men's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.6 seconds.

The men's relays earned the Rams three more top-10's as the WSSU "A" relay team placed second in the 4x100 meter relay with a time of 42.66 seconds.  They turned around 10 minutes later and earned a first-place finish in the men's 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:22.20 .  The WSSU "B" relay team placed ninth in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:31.60.

On the men's field side of things, the Rams recorded a pair of top-10 finishes with Ezra Yowell's fifth-place finish as he cleared 1.96 meters and Hunter Glen's eighth-place finish with a distance of 12.84 meters (42"1.5").

The 22 top-ten finishes are the most of the season for the Rams, as they look to prepare for an impressive showing at the 2006 CIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

WSSU's men's and women's track teams will return to action on Friday and Saturday, March 7-8, 2006 at the Virginia State University Trojan Multi-Explosion track meet in Petersburg, VA.
