WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Rams and Lady Rams track & field team had one of their best meets in school history with a number of school record-setting efforts at the 2009 Aggie Relays at the Irwin Belk Track in nearby Greensboro, N.C. It was the Rams and Lady Rams youngsters that took center stage at the meet with a number of phenomenal efforts.
Backed by a large contingent of WSSU faithful, the Rams and Lady Rams broke four school records at the meet. "I'm really excited about what we did here today," WSSU track & field head coach Halcyon Blake said. "We had a lot of fans come out and cheer for us and it was wonderful that the team came out and performed the way that they did."
WSSU freshman hurdler Crystal Webley got things going for the Lady Rams when she finished eighth in the women's 100m hurdles with a school record 14.69 in the event. Fellow freshman hurdler Janae Jeter also broke a school record when she finished ninth in the women's 400m hurdles in 1:06.38.
The Lady Rams 4x100m relay team, which featured three freshmen, also set a school record with a 47.38 in the event to finish third. Only UNC and St. Augustine's had better times than the Lady Rams. The team featured senior Wykeita Barnett, freshman Chinaka Bell, freshman Denesha Jiles, and freshman Crystal Webley. The WSSU 4x400m relay team followed suit, setting a school record with a fifth-place 3:50.74 in the event. The Lady Rams' 4x200m relay team finished second in the event in 1:39.85. Only UNC posted a faster time than the Lady Rams.
The Rams also had a number of great efforts with junior Paul Williams leading the way. He finished ninth in the men's 100m dash finals at 10.95 while freshman Aaron Barnes finished third in the men's 3000m steeplechase. Barnes finished the event in 9:58.89.
The Rams' relay teams were not content with the Lady Rams setting school records and set some of their own. The Rams' 4x400m relay team set a new school record with a 3:11.48 in the event. The effort left the squad in third place.
The Rams and Lady Rams will have a bit of a break next weekend and will return to action on April 17th and 18th when the teams return to the Irwin Belk Track to take part in the International Friendship & Freedom Games.
