Results

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Winston-Salem State University track and field teams are still awaiting their first action of the 2007 indoor season as they did not enter into any of day-one's events from the Liberty Kickoff hosted by Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia on Friday.

The Rams and Lady Rams watched as Friday's events included the heptahlon and pentathlon for both men and women.  Head Coach Halcyon Blake did not enter any WSSU student-athletes into the competitions as WSSU will begin competition on day two.

Liberty senior two-time All-American Brandon Hoskins is in third place and defending event champion Daniel Newell resides in fourth after Friday's day one of the heptathlon at the Liberty Kickoff. Their efforts highlight the Flames' performances at a light opening day of competition at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center.

Hoskins (Garden City, Texas) scored 2,914 points in Friday's quartet of events, leaving him 124 tallies behind event leader Raffael Craig of the Shore AC Track Club. Meanwhile, Newell (Jr., Roanoke, Va.) is fourth among the 16 men who started the two-day, seven-event competition. Newell's point total is 2,824, 61 points off his day one-leading total from the 2006 Liberty Kickoff.

The women's pentathlon was also completed on Friday. A trio of Lady Flames were among the 15 participants, paced by newcomer Jennifer Healey (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.). Healey accumulated 2,739 points for seventh place, ending up 27 points ahead of classmate Krystle Matthews (Chesapeake, Va.), who took eighth. James Madison's Christine Nicewonger cruised to victory by more than 400 points, ending the day with 3,433 points.

The second day of the Liberty Kickoff will begin with the men's weight throw at 9 a.m., Saturday at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center. Running events will get underway two hours later, when the gun goes off for the women's 60-meter hurdles prelims. Day two of the heptathlon will get started at 11:15, when the 14 remaining competitors run the 60-meter high hurdles.
