Results

LYNCHBURG, VA - The Winston-Salem State Rams and Lady Rams Indoor Track & Field teams got out of the blocks for a great effort on the second day of the 2009 Liberty Kick Off. The Rams and Lady Rams used some great efforts in sprints and distance events for a great start to the 2009-10 season.

WSSU sophomore runner Andrew Chebii, who was a dominant during the cross country season, wasted little time in making his mark with wins a pair of first place finishes at the meet. He opened the day with a first-place finish in the men's 800m run and followed the effort with a first-place finish in the men's mile run. Chebii posted a 1:56.78 to take first place in the event. He edged out fellow WSSU sophomore Desmond Wiggan who was a close second at 1:57.26. The same duo would finish first and second in the men's mile run as well with Chebii taking first place with a 4:24.66 while Wiggan came in at 4:27.87.

Not to be outdone, WSSU senior sprinter Paul Williams had a great day as well, winning the men's 200m dash in 22.86. The effort came on the heels of a second-place finish in the men's 60m dash as he posted a 6.98 in the event. His time was the best among collegiate runners as he was beaten by an unattached runner.

The Lady Rams also saw a number of great performances on the day with freshman Tyrah Winfrey leading the way. The freshman, who was the team's top runner during the cross country season, had a great day, placing second in the women's 800m run. She posted a 2:23.02 in the event, three seconds behind the winner, a runner from Liberty. Fellow freshman Manuela Rigaud was also impressive in the event, placing 4th in the event with a 2:26.96. She edged out junior Taylor Calamese, who finished 5th with a 2:27.93. Sophomore Denesha Jiles also had a strong day, reaching the women's 60m dash finals and placing 6th in the event. She posted a 8.09 in the event. The WSSU sprint relay team was also strong, placing second with a 4:02.33 in the women's 4x400m dash.
