2009 WSSU Track & Field/Cross Country Signees Gallery
WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Winston-Salem State University track & field/cross country head coach Halcyon Blake announced the signing of five talented student-athletes that will join the Rams and Lady Rams this fall. The Lady Rams cross country and track & field program will welcome a standout trio while the Rams will add a pair of talented newcomers to the 2009 squad.
This fall, the Rams and Lady Rams track & field program will welcome some of the top talent in North Carolina as well as one of the top student-athletes in Michigan. “They [the signees] have competed at the state and national levels,” WSSU track & field and cross country head coach Halcyon Blake said. “And we are really excited about the possibilities for them here at Winston-Salem State University.”

The Lady Rams will welcome some of the top talent in the state in signing Tyrah Winfrey and Korin Shepherd. Winfrey is a decorated athlete from Seventy First High School in Fayetteville, N.C. who has been impressive both in cross country and in track & field. She posted a 19:48 in the NCHSAA 4A Cross Country Championship as well as a 1:20 at the 500m. Shepherd is another addition from Mallard Creek High School in Charlotte, N.C. where she also earned numerous honors. “She is a hard worker, dependable, and she is respectful. These qualities place her in high esteem among her fellow teammates” said her former head coach Joan Green. “She serves as a calming force when interactions among her teammates are heading in a less than positive direction.” Shepherd is also very active in the community.
Also joining the Lady Rams track & field and cross country program will be Kanaya M. Williams of Romulus High School in Romulus, Michigan. She is a well decorated athlete who in impressive in competition and in the classroom. She has run numerous state championships in middle distance events and will also bring a big lift to the Lady Rams cross country squad as well.
The trio will join a Lady Rams cross country and track & field squads that set numerous school records last season and are poised to continue their strong run this season.
Joining the Rams squad will be the duo of Fabian D. White, Jr. and Darius Cureton, two of the top track & field athletes in the state of North Carolina. The duo will bring their talents to the WSSU squad that has been making grand strides in recent years.
White is a talented runner who will provide a lift to the Rams’ cross country squad as well as the indoor and outdoor track & field teams. He finished seventh in the NCHSAA 4A Cross Country Championships with a time of 16:34 and competed in the Mile Run at the NCHSAA e4A Outdoor State Championship Meet. Also joining the Rams will be sprinter/jumper Darius Cureton, who is a graduate of Monroe High School in Monroe, N.C. He took home the 2A Regional championship and finished 3rd at the NCHSAA Championship meet in the 300m intermediate hurdles. He finished the event in 39.80. “He is a very versatile runner who is very determined and driven to pursue excellence both on and off the field,” Blake added.
The Rams and Lady Rams will begin competition in the fall of 2009. The WSSU cross country season will open on September 5th at the UNC-Pembroke Invitational.
