Lady Rams Fall Short in Hard-Fought Five-Set Loss to Saint Augustine's

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (0-14, 0-5 CIAA) gave it all they had, but the team fell just short in a dramatic five-set loss to the Saint Augustine's Lady Falcons (4-6, 4-0 CIAA). After opening the match on a down note with a pair of losses 31-29 and 25-22, the Lady Rams rallied back to take wins in the next two sets, 25-17 and 25-21. However, the match ended with a heartbreaking 15-11 deciding set that saw the team's rally fall short in the tough loss.

As a team, the Lady Rams gave an impressive effort with 45 total kills in the match with 12 service aces. The team ran into some hitting struggles as well with 31 hitting errors. WSSU senior middle blocker De Ann Smith had a great match with 17 kills, three service aces, and six total blocks (two solo) in the match. Fellow senior right side Francesca Edgerton added 10 kills as well.

The first set was a dramatic run that saw both teams mount rallies and take leads throughout the set. After taking a five-point lead, the Lady Rams saw themselves trailing late, and rallied to tie the set at 24-24. In the extra points, both teams stepped up to match each other at every turn, but in the end, as WSSU attack error was followed by a Lady Falcons end that ended the set. In the second set, the Lady Rams and Lady Falcons battled back and forth throughout the entire set. After WSSU rallied from a 20-18 deficit to tie the set 22-22, the team allowed three straight SAU points to end the set.

It was in the third set that the Lady Rams took charge of the match with a dominating 25-17 win in the set. Highlighting the set were six straight WSSU points that included four kills by Smith. The Lady Rams kept things moving in the fourth set. The team took a four-point 20-16 lead in the match and cruised on to the 25-21 win in the set.

Things then took a turn for the team in the fifth set when Saint Augustine's took a 7-2 lead in the final set. Though the Lady Rams mounted a late rally to cut their deficit down to just three points 14-11, but a WSSU attack error ended the match for the Lady Rams.
