RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (1-14, 1-5 CIAA) held off the tough Shaw Lady Bears (7-6, 3-2 CIAA) for a three-set road win, Monday evening. After falling into a deficit early in the match, the Lady Rams maintained their composure to retake control of the match and fought their way to the victory.
The Lady Rams posted one of their best outings of the season in the win with 33 total kills in the match with only 17 errors. The team also benefited from a stellar service game with a season-high 15 service aces in the match. WSSU senior middle blocker De Ann Smith led the way for the Lady Rams with 14 kills and five service aces in the match. Junior hitter Avoni Seymour added five kills with four service aces of her own.
Things looked tough early for the Lady Rams as the team fell into an early 10-3 deficit. However, the team was able to regain their composure and stormed back to take control of the set with a 17-6 run that left the team leading, 20-16. Though Shaw would put up a fight, the Lady Rams went on to take the opening set win.
The second set was another battle for the Lady Rams as the two teams battled to a 10-10 tie. Shaw would assert themselves to take a 16-13 lead, but the Lady Rams would not relent, outscoring the Lady Bears 12-2 to close out the set.
The third set of the match was not much of a battle for the Lady Rams as the team asserted themselves early with an 11-5 opening run. From there, the Lady Rams would soon find themselves having to fight off Shaw once again as the Lady Bears pulled within two points 17-15. However, the Lady Rams would not relent as the team went on to finish match with a 25-19 win.
