WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (4-14, 4-5 CIAA) closed out the CIAA Round-Up in style with a four-set win over the Bowie State Lady Bulldogs (3-15, 1-8 CIAA), Sunday morning. The WSSU offense clicked on all cylinders in the match when the team took the win 25-10, 25-16, 21-25, and 25-16 to close out the round-up with a perfect 3-0 record for the weekend.
As a team, the Lady Rams had one of their best efforts of the season with 44 kills and just 17 errors. The team also totaled 47 digs as well in the match. The Lady Rams utilized a balanced attack with senior right side Francesca Edgerton and sophomore hitter Chelsea Violenes leading the way with eight kills each. Junior hitter Katelyn Sigala added eight kills as well with five service aces in the match.
The Lady Rams looked great early in the 25-10 opening set victory. The set included a run of nine straight WSSU points with Edgerton serving. The second set saw much of the same with the Lady Rams cruising to the 25-16 victory that saw a seven-point run by the Lady Rams as well. The run included a pair of blocks by Violenes as well.
Things got tough in the third set when Bowie State showed a lot of fight to come away with the 25-21 win. The Lady Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead and held off a late WSSU rally to push the match into its fourth set.
With the match on the line, the Lady Rams stepped up their efforts behind with a six-point run to close out the set and claim the match victory.
With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 4-14 for the season and move to 4-5 in the CIAA. The team will return to action Thursday evening when they head to Charlotte, N.C. to take on the Johnson C.
