Lady Rams Hold On For Hard-Fought Five-Set Win Over Johnson C. Smith

CHARLOTTE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (5-14, 4-5 CIAA) pulled out a tough, hard-fought win over the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls (4-11, 3-7 CIAA), Thursday evening. The Lady Rams broke out for their best offensive effort of the season and needed every single point in the 24-26, 28-26, 21-25, 25-22, and 15-12 win over the Lady Golden Bulls.

The Lady Rams broke out in the match with 63 kills in the match. WSSU senior right side Francesca Edgerton led the way for the Lady Rams with 21 kills and six block assists in the match. Fellow senior middle blocker De Ann Smith added 13 kills while sophomore Chelsea Violenes added 10 kills.

Things got off to a slow start for the Lady Rams as the team took a 21-25 loss in the opening set. After battling to an 18-18 tie, the team allowed an 8-3 run by the Golden Bulls to close out the set. In the second set, things remained close as well with the Lady Rams holding a 24-23 lead in the set. JCSU would go on to tie the set 24 and pushed it into extra points. In the end, however, it was a three-point run by the Lady Rams that ended the set and tied the match 1-1. In the critical third set, the Lady Rams once again fell behind 15-21 and mounted a late rally, but came up short with the 21-25 loss.

With the match on the line, the Lady Rams battled their way back in the fourth set with a 25-22 win that included a 20-15 lead by the Lady Rams. In the deciding set, the Lady Rams and Lady Golden Bulls battled to another tie, 12-12. But in the end, it was three straight WSSU points that included a kill by sophomore Darissa Jones, a kill by Smith, and a service ace by sophomore setter Kayla Brass.

The win was the fifth straight for the Lady Rams and improved the team to 4-5 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play and moved the team to 2-1 in the CIAA Southern Division. The team will look to keep things going when they head to nearby Salisbury, N.C. to take on the Livingstone Lady Blue Bears, Monday evening.
