Lady Rams Take Hard-Fought Five Set Loss at Livingstone

SALISBURY, NC – The Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams (5-15, 5-6 CIAA, 2-2 CIAA South) gave it all they had, but the team came up short in a hard-fought five-set road loss to the Livingstone Lady Blue Bears (15-4, 6-4 CIAA, 3-1 CIAA South), Monday evening. After taking an opening set 23-25 loss, the Lady Rams bounced back for 25-18 and 25-19 wins in the second and third set before falling 20-25 and 11-15 in the final two sets.

The match was a back-and-forth affair with both teams making big runs and neither team backing down. However, a late momentum swing to the Lady Blue Bears ended the evening for the Lady Rams in the loss. As a team, the Lady Rams had a strong offensive effort with 51 kills, but were hampered by 36 attack errors in the match.  Senior right side hitter Francesca Edgerton led the way for the Lady Rams with 22 kills in the match with just nine attack errors. Fellow senior De Ann Smith added nine kills with seven total blocks (three solo). Sophomore setter Kayla Brass added 33 assists while junior hitter Avoni Seymour added 17 digs.

The opening set of the match was a real battle that saw a late WSSU rally fall short. After falling behind, 19-23, the Lady Rams scored three straight points to pull within one point, 22-23. The team forced a pair of LC attack errors in the run. However, a Livingstone kill was followed by a WSSU attack error to end the set.

The Lady Rams came to life in the second and third sets with dominating wins, 25-18 and 25-19. In the second set, WSSU closed out the set with a 7-2 run. The team kept things going in the third set with a 5-2 run to close things out.

The tables turned on the Lady Rams in the fourth set. After riding the momentum from the two set wins and taking a 14-10 lead, the Lady Rams allowed a 10-3 run by the Lady Blue Bears that left WSSU trailing 21-18. Though the Lady Rams made an effort to claw their way back into the set, the effort was not enough with Livingstone sealing the 25-20 set win. In the final set, the Lady Rams could not match the Lady Blue Bears. After falling behind, 8-12, the team could not crack the four-point cushion and finished the match with the 15-11 loss.

The Lady Rams will not have long to linger on the loss as the team will return to action, Thursday evening when the team hosts the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos in a 6:00 p.m. match.
