WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (8-19, 8-7 CIAA) had to dig deep to fend off the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (5-18, 2-11 CIAA), Monday evening. The Lady Rams and Lady Golden Bulls had a classic three-set match that saw every point challenged on both sides of the court. In the end, it was the Lady Rams who came on top with the 25-23, 25-23, and 31-29 win.
The Lady Rams had a great effort in the match with 45 total kills and just 25 attack errors. The team also added 55 digs and 8.0 total blocks. WSSU senior right side Francesca Edgerton led the way for the Lady Rams with a double-double 18 kills and 11 digs in the match. Junior outside hitter Avoni Seymour added 15 kills with eight digs. Junior libero Katelyn Sigala added 14 digs.
The Lady Rams looked in control of the match early with a 9-3 lead. However, JCSU would not give in so easily as they mounted a furious late rally to tie the match 22-22. With the set in doubt, the Lady Rams turned to the duo of Edgerton and Seymour. Seymour added a pair of kills while Edgerton added another to seal the 25-23 opening set win. The second set turned out to be a battle as well with the Lady Rams mounting an 18-13 lead. JCSU would once again tie the set 22-22. However it was senior De Ann Smith and Edgerton, combined with some timely errors by the Golden Bulls that sealed the win for the Lady Rams.
The tables turned in the third set with JCSU taking the 8-6 early lead. The two teams continued to battle with WSSU taking a two-point lead, 20-18, but the Golden Bulls would tie the match once again. The two teams carried the battle into extra points when WSSU closed it out with a Smith kill followed by a forced error by JCSU to end the match, 31-29.
With the win, the Lady Rams improve to 8-7 in CIAA play and move into a solid third place in the CIAA Southern Division. The team will take on a pair of non-conference road foes when they face the King Tornado, Thursday evening, followed by a match at North Greenville.
