WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (9-22, 9-7 CIAA) picked up an emotional Senior Night victory, Monday evening when the team took a five-set win over the Livingstone Blue Bears (24-6, 10-6 CIAA). After taking a pair of losses in the second and third set and trailing late in the fourth set, the Lady Rams fought back late to close out the evening with the 25-9, 18-25, 17-25, 26-24, and 15-10 victory.
As a team, the Lady Rams battled their way to the win behind an outstanding overall effort that featured 61 total team kills and 93 digs. WSSU junior outside hitter Avoni Seymour led the way for the Lady Rams with a double-double 20 kills and 16 digs in the match. Junior utility Katelyn Sigala added 25 digs with eight kills as well.
The Lady Rams got things going early with a dominating effort in the opening set, taking a 25-9 win in the opening set. The Lady Rams went on a 12-2 run to close out the win in the set. The team's hot start cooled off in the second and third set with Livingstone taking the next two sets, 25-18 and 25-17. Things looked bleak for the Lady Rams late in the fourth set as well as the team trailed 16-21 late. However, the Lady Rams went on a 10-3 run to take the set win. Trailing 24-22, the Lady Rams to back-to-back Seymour kills to tie the set 24-24 and set the stage for the deciding fifth set.
The Lady Rams' momentum carried over into the fifth set as the team took control of the set with a 5-1 opening run. With the match on the line, the Lady Rams rolled late to seal the night with the 15-10 set win.
With the win, the Lady Rams close out the regular season with a 9-22 record and a 9-7 record in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). The team also moves into a tie for second place in the CIAA Southern Division with a 6-3 division record. The team will await final seeding and will take part in the 2012 CIAA Volleyball Championship Tournament in Hampton, Virginia on November 16-18th.
