HAMPTON, VA – After notching an upset win over Virginia State earlier in the day, the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (10-23) took a four-set loss to the top seeded Fayetteville State Lady Broncos in pool play at the 2012 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Championship Tournament, Friday afternoon. The Lady Rams battled in the match, pushing it to four sets, but the team could not stand up to the top seeded Lady Broncos, who have not lost a match to a conference foe this season.
After taking a pair of tough losses in the first two sets of the match, 25-15 and 25-13, the Lady Rams bounced back to win the third set, 25-23 and forced a fourth set against the Lady Broncos. However, in the final set, the Lady Broncos ended the match with a 25-21 win.
As a team, the Lady Rams struggled against the FSU defense with just 33 kills and 28 attack errors in the match. WSSU freshman middle blocker Olivia Owens continued her strong play with a team-high 10 kills in the match. However, she was the only Lady Ram to reach double-digit kills in the contest. Junior libero Katelyn Sigala added a team-high 28 digs as well.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 1-1 in pool play and will need to hold off the fourth-seeded Virginia Union Lady Panthers to advance to single-elimination play at the tournament tomorrow.
