WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (15-11, 14-2 CIAA) finished the 2013 regular season in style when the team took a dominant three-set win over the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls (13-13, 8-7 CIAA), Monday evening. With the win, the Lady Rams clinched the top spot in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division and the right to host the opening round of the 2013 CIAA Volleyball Championship Tournament.
The Lady Rams had to fend off a scrappy Golden Bulls team that fought for every point, but the WSSU defense prevailed as the Lady Rams took the win, 25-12, 25-22, and 25-18. The Lady Rams turned the match into a block party as the team totaled 22 blocks (four solo) in the match. WSSU sophomore right side Olivia Owens led the WSSU offensive effort with 11 kills and added four blocks assists. Joining Owens in the strong blocking effort was junior middle hitter Chelsea Violenes, who totaled seven blocks (one solo). Fellow junior middle blocker Darrisa Jones added three blocks (two solo). Senior outside hitter Avoni Seymour added eight kills with 15 digs as well. Fellow senior libero Katelyn Sigala added 16 digs in the match.
