Lady Rams Battle, Fall Short in Four-Set Loss to Fayetteville State in 2013 CIAA Championship Match

FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (18-12) left it all on the court, but the team could not get over the hump as the team took a four-set loss to the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos (19-7) in the 2013 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Championship match. The Lady Rams fought hard for all four sets of the match, but were outgunned by the Lady Broncos in their bid for the CIAA championship by scores of 25-23, 28-26, 25-16, and 25-22.

As a team, the Lady Rams had a solid overall match, recording 45 kills in the match with six service aces and 16 total blocks (none solo). WSSU senior outside hitter Avoni Seymour led the way for the Lady Rams with a double-double 10 kills and 12 digs in the match while fellow senior Katelin Wensley and junior middle hitter Darrisa Jones added nine kills each as well. Senior libero Katelyn Sigala added 11 digs as well.

The Lady Rams had to show their resolve early in the match with Fayetteville State jumping out to a 9-3 lead, but the Lady Rams fought back as a pair of back-to-back Jones kills pulled the Lady Rams within two points, 20-22. From there, the Lady Rams took advantage of a pair of FSU errors to pull within one point, 22-23. However, the Lady Rams traded points with the Lady Broncos to end the set with the 23-25 loss.

In the second set, the Lady Rams were able to keep up their momentum and rolled to the set win. After battling to a 10-10 tie, the Lady Rams ran into some struggles, falling behind, 16-13. Though down, the team was not out as the Lady Rams scored four straight points later in the match to tie the game, 25-25. The team closed out the set when a Jones kill was followed by an FSU attack error that gave the Lady Rams the 28-26 set win and tied the match at one set each.

The third set saw the Lady Rams battle to an 8-8 tie, but the Lady Broncos went on to score eight unanswered points. The run included four WSSU hitting errors. From there, the Lady Rams were able to muster just three more kills in the set and finished with the 25-16 loss.

The Lady Rams were able to recover in the final set, but did not have enough left to stop the Lady Broncos. The Lady Rams built a three-point lead, 15-12 midway through the set. However a 5-2 FSU run tied the set 17-17. From there, the Lady Rams allowed five straight points to the Lady Broncos. The run included a pair of WSSU receiving errors and an attack error. The Lady Rams made a great effort late in the set, cutting their deficit down to just one point, 22-23. However a pair of FSU kills ended the match and halted the Lady Rams' bid for the conference title.

Winston-Salem State sophomore right side hitter Olivia Owens and junior setter Kayla Brass were both named to the CIAA All-Tournament team. With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 18-12 on the season and will hope for a bid to the 2013 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Tournament.
