Rams Cruise in Three-Set Win Over Lincoln (Pa.)

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (4-3, 1-0 CIAA) clicked on all cylinders when the team took a dominating three-set win over the Lincoln (Pa.) Lions (1-2, 0-1 CIAA), Saturday afternoon in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Round Up. The Rams combined a stellar defensive effort with a breakout offensive effort to open conference play with a 25-8, 25-14, and 25-7 win at Whitaker Gymnasium.

As a team, the Rams put on a great overall performance in the match. In addition to holding the Lions to just six kills in the match, the Rams added 37 kills to pull away with the victory. WSSU freshman outside hitter Jessica Young led the way for the Rams with eight kills while junior outside hitter Mia Herrod and junior middle blocker Christa Brown added seven kills each. Sophomore middle blocker Brycelin Spidel also added three solo blocks in the match as well.

The Rams took control of the match with a dominating first set. After allowing the Lions to take a 3-1 lead to open the set, the Rams rolled off a 15-1 run to take control of the set, 16-4. From there, the Rams kept things going to push their lead to 17 points, 22-5 before closing out the set with a final score of 25-8.

Lincoln (Pa.) put on a better effort in the second set, but the Rams would not allow the Lions to get any momentum as they cruised to the set win.  Once again, Lincoln (Pa.) started out with an early lead, but the Rams once again ran off a big run to take a 10-3 lead. But the Lions would answer; however, as they scored four straight points to cut the WSSU lead down to three points, 10-7. The Rams once again jumped ahead with a 7-2 run to remain in control, 21-12. After allowing back-to-back scores to the Lions to pull to within seven points, 21-14, the Rams closed out the set with three straight kills from Young, freshman Alexis Gregson-Hammond, and Brown to wrap up the 25-14 win.

The final set was the most impressive for the Rams as the team wrapped up the victory with a 25-7 win. The set included a blazing 15-1 run to open the set and the Rams never looked back. Lincoln (Pa.) would add back-to-back scores to show some signs of life, but the Rams would answer with six straight points to close out the 25-7 win.

With the win, the Rams open CIAA play with a 1-0 record and improve to 4-3 overall for the season. The Rams will return to action later today when the team takes on the Chowan Hawks in a 5:00 p.m. match at Whitaker Gymnasium.
