Rams Take a Three-Set Win Over Elizabeth City State for 10th Straight Victory

PETERSBURG, VA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (10-3, 8-0 CIAA) stayed strong when the team took a three-set win over the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings (2-16, 2-8 CIAA), Sunday morning at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Volleyball Round Up. The Rams claimed their 10th straight victory in dominating fashion as they defeated the Lady Vikings, 25-12, 25-18, and 25-12.

The Rams took the win behind a great overall performance. Offensively, the Rams totaled 40 kills while holding ECSU to just 16 kills. WSSU senior outside hitter Jasmine Smith led the way for the Rams with eight kills in the match while fellow senior outside hitter Sydney Holland added seven kills. Defensively, WSSU sophomore libero Makala Lytton led the way for the Rams with 12 digs. Lytton also made an impact on the scoreboard when she recorded six service aces in the match.

The Rams broke the opening set open early and never looked back. After jumping out to an 11-4 lead, the Rams kept up the pressure when they later broke out with six unanswered points to take a 23-10 lead. The two teams would trade points after that for the Rams to claim the 23-12 opening set victory.

The second set was more competitive, but the Rams were more than up to the challenge. This time, it was Elizabeth City State that jumped out early with a 5-0 run to open the set. The Rams would trim their deficit down to three points, 5-8 before breaking the set open with a 7-1 run that put the Rams on top, 12-9. The Rams added a 6-1 run later to go ahead, 18-10. After allowing ECSU to pull to within four points, 22-18, the Rams wasted little time in ending the set with three straight points to close the 25-18 set win.

There would be less drama in the final set of the match. The Rams opened the set in dominating fashion, going on a 14-4 run to get things started. The Rams allowed three straight points to the Lady Vikings, but the team would never allowed them back into the set as they closed the set with an 8-2 run that ended the match, 25-12.

With the win, the Rams improve to 10-3 overall and remain a perfect 8-0 in CIAA play. The team will return to action, Thursday when the team heads to Raleigh, N.C. to take on the Shaw Lady Bears, the only other undefeated team in conference play.
