BELMONT, NC - The Winston-Salem State Rams (16-5) gave a solid effort, but the team could find no answers for the Belmont Abbey Crusaders (13-8), Wednesday evening. The Rams gave a solid overall effort, but the team could not seem to get their offense going against the tough Crusader defense and took the 25-18, 25-23, and 25-19 road loss.
As a team, the Rams had a solid overall match despite some offensive struggles. The Rams finished the match with just 28 kills while allowing 47 to the Crusaders. The team did total nine blocks (three solo) in the match. WSSU freshman outside hitter Alexis Gregson-Hammond led the way for the Rams with nine kills in the match while junior right side hitter Mia Herrod added seven kills. Senior setter Mya Snow totaled 27 assists while sophomore liberon Makala Lytton totaled a team-high 17 digs.
The Rams gave a solid performance early in the opening set, but the Rams fell victim to a run by the home team that put the set out of reach. After opening the match with a 5-3 lead, the Rams allowed a 5-1 rally by the Crusaders, the Rams fell behind, 6-7. The Rams would fall behind by five points, but kept the Crusaders within reach, 14-19, but the team allowed another late run by the home team to take the 25-18 loss in the opening set.
In the second set, the Rams gave a much improved effort, but fell just short, 25-23. Once again, Belmont Abbey jumped ahead, 8-3 before the Rams got things into gear. After leeping to within five points, 17-22, the Rams staged a late rally to cut their deficit down to just one point 23-24. However, a Crusader kill ended the set for the Rams.
The third set saw a valiant effort, but the Rams had no answer for the Crusaders. The Rams and Crusaders played to an 18-18 tie before Belmont Abbey exploded for a 7-1 run that ended the match for the Rams.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 16-5. The team will return home for their next action as they will host the Shaw Lady Bears in a 7:00 p.m. match, Tuesday, October 31st.
