HARTSVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (0-2) could find no answers when the team took a three-set loss to the Emmanuel (Ga.) Lions (2-0) at the Coker/FMU Fall Invitational, Friday afternoon. The Rams found points hard to come by in the 25-11, 25-11, and 25-15 loss.
The WSSU offense struggled against the tough Lions defense, Friday. As a team, the Rams managed just 12 kills in the loss. WSSU junior outside hitter Ytae Cobb led the way for the Rams with six kills in the loss. Sophomore setter Brittany Carpenter added 12 assists with two service aces.
The opening set was a tough one for the Rams who struggled to get their bearings. The team opened the set on a down note, falling behind 3-9. A block by sophomore Alexis Gregson-Hammond and Cobb gave the Rams a boost and left the team trailing, 5-13. The Rams fell behind by as many as 13 points before cutting their deficit down two 12 points, 11-23. The Rams allowed back-to-back points to the Lions to take the loss.
The second set had a better start by the Rams, but the team was victim to a late rally by the Lions. A service ace from freshman Myra Wallace capped a 4-3 start by the Rams. The hot start was negated by a big run by the Lions that left the Rams trailing, 7-15. Carpenter and sophomore Alexis Gregson-Hammond added a block that lifted the team to within six points, 9-15. From there, the Rams ran into some struggles as kills from sophomore middle blocker Danyale Berry and Cobb were all that the Rams could muster in the 25-11 loss.
The third set looked a lot like the second set with a strong start by the Rams falling short. The Rams kept the set close early when a Berry kill kept the Rams to within a point, 5-6. From there, the Rams allowed six straight points to the Lions to fall behind 5-12 before another Berry kill. The Rams were able to stage a rally of their own with four straight points. The run included a kill by Carpenter as well as a pair of service aces. The effort left the Rams within four points, 11-15. However, the Rams would get no closer as the Lions pulled way late to hand the Rams the 25-15 loss.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 0-2. The team will return to action, tomorrow when they head to Florence, S.C. to take on the Lees-McRae Bobcats in a 9:00 a.m. match.
