WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (8-12, 7-2 CIAA) got back to their winning ways, Thursday evening when the team took a three-set win over the Livingstone Blue Bears (5-7, 5-5 CIAA). The Rams controlled much of the match, but the team needed a big third-set rally to claim the wins.
The Rams took the win behind a great overall team effort. WSSU took the win behind a great offensive effort with 41 kills while holding Livingstone to just 22 kills. WSSU junior outside hitter Ytae Cobb led the way for the Rams with 15 kills. Sophomore middle blocker Alexis Gregson-Hammond added seven kills while sophomore outside hitter Danyale Berry added six kills.
The opening set belonged to the Rams as the team took control of the match from the very beginning with a dominating opening set. The team opened the match on a high note, outscoring the Blue Bears, 12-4 to start the match. Once in control of the set, the Rams never looked back. The Rams'' most impressive run came when the team took a 20-9 lead over the Blue Bears. From there, the Rams simply cruised to the 25-15 opening set win.
The second set was more competitive, but the Rams once again prevailed with some more big rallies. The set was much more competitive in the beginning as the two teams played to an 11-11 tie before WSSU broke the set open with a 9-2 run that included a pair of Taylor kills. The effort left the Rams on top, 18-13. The Rams would not let the Blue Bears any closer as they pulled away late to take the 25-18 set win.
The third set was the most exciting set of the match as both teams showed a lot of heart. Once again, the Rams jumped out with a terrific effort with a 10-1 start to the set. Livingstone answered in big way when they went on a 14-3 run that left the Rams trailing, 15-13. From there, the Rams had their work cut out for them as they soon fell behind the Blue Bears, 23-19. WSSU then went on a four-point run to tie the set 24-24 before a block from Gregson-Hammond and sophomore setter Brittany Carpenter sealed the 28-26 set win and the three-set match win.
With the win, the Rams snap a two-match skid and improve to 8-12 overall on the season and 7-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team also improves to 1-2 in CIAA Southern Division play. The Rams will return to action, Monday when they host the Fayetteville State Broncos in a 6:00 p.m. match.
