WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (12-12, 10-2 CIAA) continued to roll when the team took a dominating three-set win over the Claflin Panthers (4-12, 4-7 CIAA), Wednesday evening. The Rams clicked on all cylinders in the match, taking the win, 25-8, 25-23, and 25-7.
The Rams controlled the match from the very beginning with their most dominant performance of the season. The team totaled 36 kills with nine service aces and five total blocks (one solo). WSSU junior outside hitter Ytae Cobb kept up her great season when she totaled 12 kills in the match with four service aces and a block (one solo). Junior outside hitter Miranda Taylor added seven kills while sophomore middle blocker Danyale Berry added seven kills as well with seven digs.
The opening set belonged to the Rams from the very beginning. The Rams opened the set with a 10-2 run that included a kill and a service ace from Cobb. The run also included a block from Taylor and junior opposite Alexis Bynum. From there, the Rams pushed their lead to as many as 17 points, 24-7 before another Cobb kill ended the set, 25-8.
The second set was the most competitive one as an early WSSU lead evaporated late. The Rams opened the set with a 7-3 run that included two Cobb kills and a kill from sophomore setter Brittany Carpenter. The Rams went ahead by as many as eight points 20-12, but it was then the Rams allowed the Panthers to make a late comeback. The Rams allowed the Panthers to come back to within one point, 24-23 before closing the set on a Panther service error.
After facing a challenge in the second set, the Rams responded in a big way with their best set of the match. The Rams jumped out early with a 15-2 lead. The team had a pair of Cobb service aces and a kill from Cobb. From there, the Rams continued to roll, pushing their lead to as many as 17 points, 23-6 after a Cobb kill. The team allowed one more point to the Panthers before a Claflin service error and a Cobb kill ended the match.
With the win, the Rams improve to 12-12 overall and 10-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team also improves to 5-2 in CIAA Southern Division play. The Rams will return to action, Tuesday when the team heads to Orangeburg, S.C. for a rematch against the Panthers at 6:00 p.m.
