Rams Take a Three-Set Win Over Claflin for Sixth Straight Victory

ORANGEBURG, SC- The Winston-Salem State Rams (13-12, 12-2 CIAA) kept their strong ways rolling with the team taking a three-set win over the Claflin Panthers (4-15, 4-10 CIAA), Tuesday evening. The Rams took the win behind a great overall effort, holding the Panthers back to claim the 25-12, 25-11, and 25-21 win.

The Rams took the win behind a dominating effort. The Rams totaled 39 kills in the match while holding Claflin to just 19 kills. The Rams also benefitted from a strong service game with 10 service aces in the match. WSSU junior middle hitter Danyale Berry led the way for the Rams with 12 kills in the match. Junior outside hitter Ytae Cobb added eight kills with three service aces and four total blocks (none solo).

WSSU dominated the match from the very beginning. After playing to a 4-4 tie, the Rams broke away in the opening set with an 11-2 run to go ahead, 15-6. The run included service aces from freshman libero Gabrielle Azar and Myra Wallace. From there, the Rams continued to roll as they pulled away for the 25-12 opening set win.

The second set saw a bit more of the same as the Rams continued their domination. This time, the Rams jumped out to an 8-2 lead over the Panthers. Berry added a service ace during the run. From there, the Rams pushed their lead to as many as 13 points, 22-9 before the Rams closed out the set with a 25-11 win.

The third set was the most challenging for the Rams, but the team would not relent as they took the win. Once again, the Rams cruised early with a 9-4 start to the set. After taking a late 21-14 lead, the Rams saw a resurgence by the Panthers as the WSSU lead was reduced to just two points, 21-19. However, the Rams would not go away as they scored three straight points, including kills from Berry and Cobb to take a 24-19 lead. The Rams would allow back-to-back scores by the Panthers, but ended the match with a Berry kill.

With the win, the Rams improve to 13-12 overall and 12-2 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team also improves to 6-2 in CIAA Southern Division play. The Rams will return to action, Friday afternoon when the team takes on the division leading Shaw Lady Bears in a 4:00 p.m. match, Friday.
