Douglas Hunter joined the Winston-Salem State University staff in the spring of 2007 when he took the reins as the team's fourth head coach in school history. With a wealth of experience and a strong knowledge of the game, Hunter is well-prepared to lead WSSU volleyball into the next chapter of its storied history. Championships seem to follow Hunter as he has been a part of six Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association championships.
Hunter joins the WSSU coaching staff following a five-year stint at rival North Carolina Central where he served an assistant coach since 2002. During his tenure at NCCU, Hunter was a part of three CIAA championships (2004, 2005, and 2006) as well as the team's first appearance in the NCAA Division II Regionals in 2004, followed by another appearance in 2005. Well-versed in CIAA volleyball, Hunter also spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, North Carolina. Hunter once again helped guide the Lady Falcons to CIAA championships in 1997, 2000, and 2001. Once again, Hunter was a part of school history helping to guide the team to its first NCAA Division II Regionals for the first time in school history.
Prior to heading into the CIAA competition, Hunter spent two seasons as head coach of the Long Island Big Apple Volleyball Club (16s). In addition to his duties as head coach, Hunter acted as the team's technical director. He also spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
Before heading to the sidelines, Hunter spent 15 years as an executive member of the Jamaica Volleyball Association serving a number of positions in the association as its Vice President, Technical Director (1992) and chairman of several committees during his tenure.
As a player, Hunter has a wealth of experience playing in Jamaica and playing in the USAV Men's Hi A Club with the DVC.net as well as playing on the International Jammers Volleyball Club in the Men's Open Club. He was a well-decorated player earning Best Middle Blocker, Best Defensive Player, and Best Passer honors with the Jamaica Volleyball Association during his career from 1984 to 1994. He also earned Men's Hi A All-Region honors in 1998. He was also an official with the USAV, the FIVB, and JVA Nationals.
Hunter is a 1999 graduate of St. Augustine's College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems. He is also a 1992 graduate of the University of Technology in Kingston, Jamaica.
