Winston-Salem, NC - Emotion ran high for the Lady Rams volleyball team on Monday evening in the Whitaker Gymnasium on the campus of Winston-Salem State University, as they squared off against the Johnson C. Smith University Lady Golden Bulls in an important CIAA volleyball match.
Not only was the contest a CIAA grudge match, and an important one for the overall conference standings, but it was the last regular-season match for the Lady Rams and marked the final home contests for three departing seniors.
Playing in their final home game for the Lady Rams were Dara Bess (OH/5'5"/Shelby, NC), Riquita Quick (MH/5'10"/Rockingham, NC), and Taquisha Hedgepeth (DS/5'6"/Fayetteville, NC) who looked to close out their college careers with a victory.
The Lady Rams used the contest to send off the three seniors in style as they defeated the Lady Golden Bulls 3-0, posting scores of 30-19; 30-20; and 30-26. In fact it would be Quick, who has long been the emotional leader for the Lady Rams, who would respond the most to playing in her last home contest as she tallied 10 kills while committing only 2 errors in 24 total attempts (.333%).
The Lady Golden Bulls were led by Desirae Riddick who tallied a game-high 16 kills and committed only one error in 37 attempts (.405) in a losing effort.
With the victory, the Lady Rams improve to 11-17 overall and 10-6 in the CIAA while the Lady Golden Bulls fall to 10-14 overall and 6-10 in the CIAA.
The Lady Rams will resume play this Friday in the opening rounds of the 2003 CIAA Volleyball Championship versus an as yet to be determined opponent in Durham, NC on the campus of North Carolina Central University.
