NCCU, St. Augustine's To Meet Again in CIAA Volleyball Final

DURHAM, NC -- Three-time defending champion Saint Augustine's College and conference rival North Carolina Central University will meet for the second consecutive year in the 2003 CIAA Women's Volleyball Championship match on Sunday (Nov. 16) at NCCU's McLendon-McDougald Gym at 10 a.m.

St. Augustine's lost its first game to a conference opponent in two seasons, but the Lady Falcons maintained their composure to earn a semifinal victory over Winston-Salem State University, 3-1 (30-10,30-19, 25-30, 30-19). The two-time conference player of the year, Magaly Gomez, amassed 19 kills, 9 service aces and 7 digs to lead SAC (24-4).

Aurea Griffith contributed 12 kills and Katrina Johnson 11 kills for the Lady Falcons. WSSU (12-19) was topped by Chasity Clark and Ebony Douglas with 7 kills each. The Lady Rams finish the season, the first under Head Coach Lataya Hilliard-Gray with a 13-19 overall record.

In the other semifinal match, NCCU (21-18) swept Virginia State, 3-0 (32-30, 30-19, 30-21). Porche' Williams led the Lady Eagles with 17 kills and 4 service aces. NCCU's Ayana Wright tallied 10 kills, Danielle Johnson-Webb recorded 7 kills and 11 blocks, and Ariel Germain had 41 assists and 7 digs.
