WILMINGTON, NC - The Winston-Salem State University women's volleyball team fell to 0-1 on the 2006 season on Friday afternoon as they were defeated by the University of Tennessee-Martin in the first round of the UNC-Wilmington "Battle At The Beach" Volleyball Tournament by the score of 3-0 (30-18, 30-11, 30-23).
The Lady Rams fell in the first game by the score 30-18 as Valentina Pushkina's six kills were not enough to overcome UT-Martin's Kathryn Sprague and Taylor Noland who recorded 13 and 11 kills respectively.
The Lady Rams quickly fell in the second game (30-11) before mounting an unsuccessful challenge in the third, and final, game of the match, ultimately losing by the score of 30-23 to fall to 0-1 on the season.
The Lady Rams, who are entering into their first season of play at the NCAA Division I level proved, with a strong showing, that they can compete with even the most seasoned programs in NCAA Division I.
