SALISBURY, NC - Catawba College defeated visiting Winston-Salem State in three games in volleyball action on Tuesday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians improve to 3-2 with the 30-19, 30-7 and 30-15 win. Winston-Salem State falls to 0-5.
Senior Summer Zuck (Kingston, TN) served Catawba to a quick 6-0 lead in the opener, picking up one of her eight aces on the night. Amanda Nantz (Troutman, NC) had a pair of early kills in the run, posting a team-high 12 on the night. The Rams pulled within 10-7, but freshman Melissa Powers (Bennett, NC) delivered a pair of kills in a 5-0 run that pushed the margin to 15-7.
Zuck had five aces in a 10-point run in game two that gave the Lady Indians a 10-1 edge. Three aces by Jessica Cleary (Boca Raton, FL) lifted Catawba to a 15-2 advantage. Powers added two kills for a 20-3 lead and Zuck ended the game with an ace. Catawba would pull away in the third game, gaining an 11-3 lead following a kill by Melissa Griffith (Williamsburg, VA). A Nantz kill pushed the lead to 20-6.
Griffith had nine kills to follow Nantz, while Missy Bartholomew (New Carlisle, IN) had nine digs. Andi Henderson (Swansboro, NC) had 35 assists. Kyra Pridgen (Wilmington, NC) and Cherena Douglass (Springfield, IL) each had three kills for WSSU. Pridgen added five digs and two blocks.
