WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (2-4, 2-0 CIAA) had to show their heart as the team battled their way to a five set win over the Virginia State Trojans. The Lady Rams' talented upperclassmen led the way as the team charged past an aggressive Trojans team, 25-21, 25-27, 18-25, 25-15, and 15-10. The win marked the team's second straight Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association win.
The Lady Rams utilized a strong offensive attack that saw the team total 53 kills against a sturdy Trojans defense that totaled 15.0 total blocks. The senior tandem of hitters Ashley Harris and Erica Cole combined for 44 kills and 119 total attacks. Harris led the effort with 30 kills on 82 attacks while Cole added 14 kills and a team-high 17 digs. Sophomore setter Kiara Brown also had a strong match with 48 assists.
The match was a battle early with four points deciding the match winner as WSSU took a 25-21 win in the opening set. The set was an all-out battle with neither team leading by more three points. With the set on the line, it was Brown to stepped up for the team as she set Harris for the final two kills of the set and sealed the set-winning point with a service ace.
The second was another nail-biter with the Lady Rams missing the clutch points in a 27-25 second set loss. A 10-8 WSSU lead turned out to be the largest lead of the set, but the Lady Rams were never quite able to get over the Trojans in the set. The Lady Rams struggles continued in the third set with the Trojans taking a 25-18 win.
The Lady Rams picked up their efforts in the third set when the team dominated the Trojans in a 25-15 fourth-set win. After battling to a 10-10 tie, the Lady Rams outscored the Trojans 15-5, including five Harris kills to power the effort. The team continued its efforts in the final set. After falling behind 7-5, the Lady Rams went on a 5-1 run to take the win.
