Winston-Salem, NC - Benedict College came into the Whitaker Gymnasium on Tuesday evening and stunned the Lady Rams and their fans as the Lady Tigers earned a 3-2 victory over Winston-Salem State University in a match that saw the Lady Rams fall behind early two games to nil, win the next two games, and fall in the fifth and deciding set 15-12.
The Lady Tigers looked to put the match on cruise control from the opening game as they squeaked out a 33-31 win in game one, and a 30-23 win in game two to pull ahead early 2-0.
Looks are often deceiving, especially when you are facing one of the CIAA's most potent offenses in Chasity Clark, Kyra Pridgen and the rotating Lady Ram front line.
That potent offense, which appeared to be laying in wait in the first two games finally awoke and breezed to victories in the third and fourth games as WSSU earned the 30-20 win in the third game and doubled up Benedict 30-15 in the fourth game to force a fifth and deciding set.
The fifth set was not without offensive fireworks as the two teams traded blows. However, a pair of unforced errors and a trio of Lady Tiger kills put the Lady Rams away for good by the score of 15-12.
With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 5-10 overall and 5-4 in the CIAA while the Lady Tigers improve to 5-2 overall (1-1 SIAC) with the win.
WSSU will have the next two days off and will return to action on Friday and Saturday as they will host a pair of teams in the 2004 Lady Ram Volleyball Invitational.
