Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Behind four players who recorded double-digit kill totals, the Lady Spartans of Norfolk State University earned a 3-1 (30-28, 30-15, 29-31, 30-25) victory over Winston-Salem State University in first-round action of the 2006 WSSU Lady Rams volleyball invitational on Saturday morning.

 

The Lady Spartans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind a 30-28 win in the first game of the match and a 30-15 victory in the match's second game.

 

WSSU head coach Lataya Hilliard-Gray's youth-laden team responded in the third game of the match as they rebounded with a 31-29 victory to pull to within one game of the Spartans.

 

Norfolk State's Karina Moore proved to be too much for WSSU as she led four Lady Spartan's into double-figures in kills as the Spartans won the fourth game of the match by the score of 30-25 to secure the victory.


 

 

 

WSSU was led by Annika Barnwell who tallied a team-high 14 kills in 27 total attack chances, turning in an attack percentage of .444, the best single-match performance of the season for any roster player.  She was joined by Kendall Sutton who earned 10 kills in the loss. 

 

Norfolk State was led by Moore's match-high 15 kills.  She was joined by Yolanda Roberts (14 kills), Chanel Barnes (12 kills) and Afryea Allen (11 kills) who each recorded at least 10 kills in the match.

 

With the win Norfolk State improves to 3-8 overall while the Lady Rams fall to 2-14 on the season.  The Lady Spartans return to action at 2:00 pm as they face the North Carolina Central University Lady Eagles.  WSSU will return to the court at 4:00 pm when they face South Carolina State University.
